Carlisle Undercroft

We are converting a disused, grade 2 listed, space under Carlisle train station into an accessible, versatile and multipurpose arts venue for the people of Cumbria. The project's core aim is to deliver an adaptable, multifunctional space in which art can be created, shared and celebrated. Once opened, theatre, performance, art exhibitions, concerts, community events and more will have a historic home in the centre of Carlisle. The space, to be named Carlisle Undercroft, will serve as a hub where the Carlisle community can discover and enjoy new cultural experiences.

We aim to create a unique centre for arts and cultural experiences in the heart of Carlisle. Formed from a historic, neglected space under Carlisle Train Station, this venue will become an environment where artists, and community members, can create and share arts and experiences.
The project has three main aims. To promote and support art in Carlisle. To encourage talent retention in the region. To revitalise a neglected and beautiful building. We are confident that once renovated, the space will be able to achieve success in these areas.

Having already been successfully used by a number of Carlisle-based community theatre groups, the space has demonstrated its raw potential. Its location, accessibility and unique atmosphere have been praised by those who’ve worked in the space, as well as the many who have engaged with the project via social media and local news outlets. Though its potential is clear, the space requires significant renovation to ensure that it is suitable and safe for all to use.

We shall make essential improvement to the site, including: restoring historical features, adding utilities, installing technical equipment such as a removable sprung floor, and creating changing rooms. We will transform the Undercroft from an unsafe immersive environment into a multipurpose venue, that is able to support art of all kinds.

The Undercroft will serve the community of Carlisle and will be a friendly, informal venue where individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds will be encouraged to create and access quality art. The Undercroft will be a space where Carlisle based talent can thrive, as well as a focal point for talent visiting the region.
